Actually, I'd like to keep ants of that species if I could find somewhere that has them in stock. They're particularly fascinating to watch, since their stomachs are transparent. If you feed them colored sugar water, you can actually see them change color.

They apparently reach the size of grapes when they're fully expanded. They store the extra nectar in case of famine or drought, so the colony doesn't have to worry about short periods where food is scarce.
An ant's storage stomach is designed so that they can easily regurgitate part of its contents. And since there's no digestion involved, it's not acidic enough to cause damage.
Though, they are edible, and I've heard the stored nectar makes them very sweet.
I doubt it would be too difficult to get a supply of rice crickets. They're one of the more commonly eaten insects, and very healthy. They even help promote good digestion.
